What Products to Use for Wavy Hair

Wavy hair sits in an awkward spot. Curl products are too heavy and flatten it. Straight hair products do nothing and it frizzes anyway. The whole trick is weight.

Waves need enough product to define and not one gram more.

Wash less than you think, but not too little

Two to three times a week is the range for most waves. Every day and you strip the oil that gives waves their shape. Once a week and buildup weighs the pattern out flat.

Sulfate free most of the time, with a clarifying wash every few weeks. Waves show buildup faster than curls do because there is less texture to hide it.

Skip conditioner at the roots entirely. Mid length down only.

Mousse is the wavy hair product

If you take one thing from this, take that. Mousse gives waves hold and volume without weight, and it is the product most wavy people skipped because it felt like a 90s throwback.

A light curl milk works too. Cream generally does not. Cream is for curls, and on waves it reads as grease within a few hours.

Apply to soaking wet hair, scrunch upward, and stop touching it.

Sea salt spray, carefully

Salt spray builds texture and grip, which waves love, and it is drying, which waves do not. Use it on the mid lengths rather than roots to ends, and follow with a light leave in on the same day.

Once or twice a week is plenty.

Gel is not just for curls

A light gel over mousse gives you a cast that holds the wave while it dries. Let it dry fully, then scrunch the crunch out with your hands. What is underneath holds its shape instead of falling into a half wave by lunch.

This one step is usually the difference between waves that last a day and waves that last three.

Drying decides everything

Rough drying with a towel is how waves become frizz. Squeeze water out with a microfiber towel or an old cotton t shirt instead, pressing upward rather than rubbing.

Air dry if you have time. Diffuse on low heat and low speed if you do not, hovering rather than moving the diffuser around.

Do not touch your hair while it dries. Every touch breaks a clump and every broken clump is frizz.

Refreshing on day two

Water in a spray bottle with a few drops of leave in. Mist, scrunch, done. Do not reapply full product to dry hair or you will be washing again by the afternoon.

What ruins day three

Tying it up. Specifically, taking it down.

Waves are looser than curls, which means they get caught in an elastic more easily rather than less. Pulling a hair tie down through wavy hair drags the wave straight, breaks every clump you formed, and leaves a permanent kink where the elastic sat.

Buckle Scrunchies open at the buckle instead of coming out through your hair. Nothing slides down the length, so the wave pattern stays intact and there is no dent where the tie was. The only easy release, zero tangle hair tie, and the reason you can put your hair up on day two and still have waves on day three.
