How to Get Your Hair to Grow Longer

How to Get Your Hair to Grow Longer

Hair grows about half an inch a month. That rate is set by your follicles and there is very little you can do to speed it up. What you can change is how much of that growth you keep.

Six inches a year comes out of your scalp. Most people see two or three, because the rest broke off. Length is not a growth problem for the vast majority of people. It is a retention problem.

Why hair stalls at one length

Everyone has a terminal length, the point where a strand reaches the end of its growth phase and sheds. For most people that is somewhere past the waist, which means almost nobody who feels stuck at their shoulders is actually at their limit.

If your hair has sat at the same length for two years, your ends are breaking off at the same rate your roots are growing. The growth is happening. It is just not accumulating.

What actually moves the growth rate

Not much, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.

Scalp circulation helps a little. A few minutes of massage most days is free and the research on it is reasonable.

Nutrition helps if you are deficient and does nothing if you are not. Iron and ferritin in particular show up in hair before they show up anywhere else. Low vitamin D and low protein intake both correlate with slower growth and more shedding. A blood panel is worth more than any supplement bought on a guess.

Sleep and stress matter more than people expect. Telogen effluvium, the shed that shows up two to three months after a stressful period, is real and common.

Minoxidil has actual evidence behind it for density. Most of what is sold as a growth serum does not.

Retention is where the length actually comes from

Trim a quarter inch every ten weeks. Counterintuitive and true. A split left alone climbs the strand and eventually costs you more than the trim would have.

Sleep on satin. Cotton pulls moisture out and creates friction all night.

Detangle wet, with conditioner, from the ends upward. Never dry from the roots down.

Keep the heat under 350 degrees and use a protectant every time.

And look at your hair ties.

The two seconds that cost you the most

Every day you put your hair up and every day you take it down. Taking it down is the part that costs you.

An elastic pulled out of a ponytail travels the full length of your hair, catching strands the whole way. Hair that has been under tension for hours is already stressed at that point, and the friction of the removal is what finishes it. This is why so many people have a distinct shelf of short broken pieces at the crown, right where the tie sits, while their ends look fine.

Athletes see it worst. Runners, cheerleaders, gymnasts, and volleyball players tie tighter and more often, and the breakage line is visible.

Buckle Scrunchies and Buckle Hair Ties click open and let go. Nothing pulls through your hair, so the highest friction moment of your day stops happening. It is the only easy release, zero tangle hair tie, and if you are trying to grow your hair, removing that daily loss does more than any serum will.

Half an inch a month is already yours. Keep it.
